Creating an Inspiring Home Art Studio

One of the biggest challenges for artists is creating an inspiring place to work. You technically do not even need an entire room to create yourself a special art work space. Even a corner of a room works perfect when you give yourself a spot to work such as a table, a chair and even a table easel does the job perfectly.

As a mom of two young children I had to figure out a place to work and also have my kids around. That’s why half of the space is designated as a toy room and the other half is my art studio. While my kids play I am able to create art.

The first thing my husband did was rip out the carpet and paint the floors white to give it a fresh look and also so I wouldn’t have to worry about spilling paint.

We bought furniture from Ikea such as my large work table and two book cases. I cover my work table with white easel paper because I am a very messy painter and often need to throw away the paper and start fresh. Easel paper really helps with the clean up!

Have lots of sunlight or a nice lamp so that you can actually see what you are doing!

Surround yourself with things you love like inspirational pictures and objects can bring you lots of creative energy and inspiration.

I have a ladder bookshelf that I like to place my favorite work. Fresh flowers or plant brings natural elements into a studio which can also be inspiring.

The most important advice in making an inspiring art studio is to make it a reflection of the art you want to make.

Surround yourself with the colors that inspire you.

I am very inspired by white and pastel colors so I make sure that everything I have around me reflects my aesthetic. Listening to awesome music and podcasts as you work, lighting an amazing smelling candle (be careful around any materials you use that are flammable!) or defusing essential oils all create the perfect environment for you to create your beautiful art.

Make sure you have plenty of space to lay out your paints, color swatches, brushes and anything else you may need!

Trying to keep the studio space clean is tricky sometimes! I often will try to make a point of cleaning at the end of the studio session so when I begin again the next day everything is fresh and clean and ready to go!

How to Make Your Own Art Space

Making a space for your art is the first step in an artistic journey.

Just having a place where you can easily take out your paint or other art supplies, create and not worry about having to put back everything perfectly is half the battle.

If you have to put your supplies away (your studio is in your dining room, the kids might mess with it, etc) I recommend that you at least buy or create a special container that you can easily store supplies in and put it away in a drawer quickly.

Making it easier on yourself is half the battle! To sum it all up here are my top tips for creating an inspiring art studio at home:

5 Tips For Creating an Inspiring Art Studio at Home

  1. Use great lighting! Natural light is ideal but at least a great lamp is important!

  2. Keep it clean and tidy if possible (at least clean it at the end of your art session so it is nice for you the next session!)

  3. Surround yourself with things that you love! Plants, artwork, magazine images, nature objects gathered on a walk, whatever you can find that gives you joy and inspires!

  4. Create a mood that makes you happy. Listen to your favorite music/podcast, light a candle, etc. Hyyge up your art space!

  5. Make it easy on yourself! If you have to clean up after each art session have a bag or container that holds your supplies and place them in a place that is easily accessible.

I hope you found some of these tips helpful! I would love to hear how you make your home art studio space inspiring for yourself!
